Toolbay makes the apps you pay for free
First we reverse engineered Wispr Flow and made it free. Then we saw Obsidian was charging for sync, so we made that free too. Now we're making Granola free. Stop paying for dumb shit.
Toolbay (toolbay.ai) is a free desktop app for Mac and Windows and the collection of free, open-source apps it installs. Each app is written from scratch to do what a popular paid app does, runs on your own computer where it can, and publishes its source code under the MIT license. There are no plans, trials or word limits.
The apps
- Toolbay FlowInspired by Wispr Flow
Voice dictation in any app. Hold a key, talk, let go, and clean text appears where your cursor is. Speech recognition and cleanup run on your computer, with no word limit.

A Markdown notes app that opens your Obsidian vaults, themes and plugins, with free, end-to-end encrypted sync built in (switching on soon). Its setup guide hands Claude a prompt to build your personal wiki.

AI meeting notes with no bot in the call. It records your mic and your computer's sound, then writes notes with decisions and action items on your own hardware.

The free launcher for Mac and Windows that installs, opens and updates all of the above in one click.

How Toolbay works
Install the Toolbay app once. From there each app installs in one click, opens from the launcher, and updates itself when a new version ships. Every app also has a plain installer on its GitHub releases page if you would rather not use the launcher.
The apps run their AI on your machine: Whisper models for speech, small open models (Qwen) for cleanup and notes. Your voice, meetings and notes stay on your computer unless you choose a cloud engine with your own key, or turn on sync.
What gets rebuilt next is voted on in Requests, and everything that ships is written up in the Toolbay newsletter.
Which Toolbay is this?
This is Toolbay at toolbay.ai, the free-software project. It is not related to toolbay.net, to the “tool bays” of FarmBot robots, or to the TOOLBAY hand-tool brands.
Credit where it's due
Wispr Flow, Obsidian and Granola are trademarks of their makers. Toolbay's apps are independent open-source projects inspired by them, and are not affiliated with or endorsed by Wispr, Dynalist Inc. or Granola. Nothing from their apps (code, assets or services) is used.
